Saratoga Lake Association Celebrates 90 Years of Stewardship, Science, and Community Leadership (1936–2026)
Via Press Release
Saratoga County, NY — March 27, 2026 — The Saratoga Lake Association (“SLA”) proudly announces the celebration of its 90th Anniversary, marking nine decades of continuous citizen-led stewardship dedicated to protecting one of the Capital Region’s most valued natural resources. Founded in 1936, the SLA will commemorate this milestone throughout 2026 with a series of public events, environmental initiatives, and expanded membership opportunities designed to engage the broader community.
For ninety years, the Saratoga Lake Association has served as the region’s leading advocate for the protection, preservation, and responsible enjoyment of Saratoga Lake. What began as a grassroots effort by local residents has evolved into a sophisticated, science-driven organization advancing water quality protection, environmental education, and multi-municipal collaboration across a 244-square-mile watershed.
A Legacy of Impact
The SLA’s history reflects a pattern of effective advocacy and measurable environmental outcomes:
-
Water Quality Protection: Early legal actions helped halt raw sewage discharge into tributaries, leading to the development of modern sewer infrastructure and significant improvements in lake conditions.
-
Institutional Leadership: The Association played a pivotal role in the creation of the Saratoga Lake Protection and Improvement District (SLPID), providing a durable governance framework for lake management.
-
Environmental Advocacy: The SLA successfully opposed proposals that threatened the lake’s ecological balance, including large-scale water withdrawal initiatives.
-
Land Conservation: Most recently, the SLA supported the permanent preservation of Snake Hill—one of the lake’s most iconic and environmentally significant landscapes.
This sustained record of accomplishment underscores the Association’s central role as a trusted, science-based advocate for Saratoga Lake and its watershed.
A Forward-Looking 90th Anniversary Year
The 2026 anniversary is not solely retrospective—it is structured as a forward-looking campaign integrating environmental stewardship, scientific innovation, and community engagement.
Throughout the year, the SLA will host a series of public-facing events, including:
-
Spring “Welcome Back to the Lake” Event
-
Mid-Summer Community Barbecue and Fundraiser
-
Fall Celebration and Photo Exhibition
-
Holiday Gathering and Annual Recognition Program
These events are designed to celebrate the Association’s legacy while inviting new participants to engage directly in its mission.
Science-Driven Stewardship
At the core of the SLA’s modern approach is its partnership with Skidmore College, which has positioned the Association at the forefront of data-driven watershed management.
-
Deployment of ten in-lake and tributary sensors to monitor conductivity, chloride, and other key indicators of water quality
-
Ongoing research addressing road salt contamination, one of the most significant emerging threats to freshwater ecosystems
-
Integration of scientific findings into municipal policy advocacy and grant initiatives
This work reflects a broader strategic commitment to ensuring that environmental decisions affecting Saratoga Lake are grounded in empirical evidence.
Membership: The Engine of Advocacy
As a volunteer-driven organization, the SLA’s effectiveness depends directly on the strength and breadth of its membership. The 90th Anniversary year will feature a comprehensive membership campaign targeting:
