IBEW Local 1430 Calls on NYS Thoroughbred Owners and Trainers To Recognize Backstretch Workers Union

From news release issued 8/21 at 3:11pm:

IBEW Local 1430 will hold a press conference tomorrow, Tuesday, August 22nd at 10:30 a.m. to announce the formation of a Backstretch Workers’ Union at the state’s thoroughbred racetracks. The press conference will take place at the Saratoga Racetrack’s Main Entrance, corner of Union Avenue and East Avenue.

Gilberto Mendoza, IBEW Local 1430’s lead organizer will be joined by

  • James Montagnino, Commissioner of Public Safety, City of Saratoga Springs
  • Terry Diggory from the Saratoga Immigration Coalition
  • Gordon Boyd, Democratic Candidate for Saratoga Springs Supervisor
  • Host of Democratic leaders from the County

“For the last few months, we’ve been collecting signatures from hundreds of the backstretch workers who know their working conditions can and should be improved. They dedicate their skills and passion to the racing world, yet their working conditions are deplorable,” said Mendoza.

“We need to guarantee that these workers receive their rightful wages so they no longer have to rely on local food drives, have better living conditions without bed bugs and rats, receive healthcare services and are treated with dignity and respect.”
